don't be silly, St George's Day, is taboo to the political left and therefore shouldn't be talked about in polite society in case it offends someone.

Don't be riddiculous Chubby, no-one has said it is racist to fly the flag or celebrate St George's Day. Unfortunately, though, such events do tend to bring out the more unsavoury elements of English society, much as when the national football team are playing. This is a problem the Irish do not have, which makes celebrating St Patrick's easier. That said, the best way to stamp out this problem is to reclaim St George's Day for the whole of the country and sideline the morons.

But did we not hear about certain councils forbidding the St Georges flag from being flown on council buildings in case it upset certain so called ethnic minorities during the last world cup?
The best part was when an Asian friend of mine arrived with two of these flags flying on his car in support of the English team.
It is the stupid irrational behaviour of the bureaucrats that is causing harm to race relations not the normal guy in the street who just wants to get on with his life.

yes it would be quite interesting what the police/council busy bodies decided to do if an Asian person was wearing an England football shirt and carrying a union flag & the flag of St George! What would they do then I wonder? Would they take the flags off him, as well as asking him to take off/hide his England shirt in case it offends someone? Or would they say the person was clearly racist?

Diana,

The George is not taboo to the political left. Unfortunately, the George has been hijacked by the extreme right and is therefore sadly seen by some as a fascist symbol.

I am left of centre in my political view and am proud to be English and am proud of my flag.

I am saddened by the ballyhoo made over St. Patrick's Day. What about St. Andtrew's and St. David's days for that matter? If all things were equal, should't the Saltire and Dragon be proudly flown and a fuss made of those days?

I think the blame lies at the commercialism door. As long as the shops etc make money (and fools and their money are easily parted), St. Patrick's Day will continue to be in your face over St. George's etc.

I have Irish heritage (and I don't know many who haven't to be honest!), but I am English and refuse to jump on the 'I'm Oirish' bandwagon just to put money in someone's coffers.

How many people would actually turn out for a St George's day celebration though? Would the only ones to bother just be the racists who have hijacked the flag?

Maybe not, because it isn't hyped so much. I attended a few in the past where there were things going on near rhe Cathedral. It was a great day out for the kids.

If people don't support it, then they shouldn't complain.

With regard to the St. Patrcik's Day celebrations, let's not forget that Brum has a large Irish community and they do organise and pay for some of the celebrations themselves.

It is rubbish to say that the so called Racists hijacked the St George's flag just because they are patriotic and believe in flying it. Thousands of people flew this flag on their cars and houses when the World Cup was on. What on earth is wrong with being patriotic.

It was the stupid bureaucrats who banned this flag from being flown on Government buildings and it was they who stupidly suggested that it might offend our ethnic majority. My Asian neighbours just couldn't believe that these people had been so naive and ridiculous particularly as they were flying the St Georges flag on their own car when the football was on.

I suppose the union jack will be the next flag to be criticised as being "too British." Shame on the left wingers, politically correct and politicians who are all out to ruin this country. Rule Brittania.

No-one has mentioned the BNP.

But as you come to mention it, any use of it by them would put an unsavoury taste in the mouths of many.

You know as well as I do Ross that as soon as racism is mentioned it is, thanks to the brainwashing from the left wingers ect, connected to the BNP.
This conclusion is totally wrong as can be shown by their increasing popularity. More and more people are realising that the BNP have some very valid points on their web site
